Then I dialed 9-1-1
Sep. 8th, 2004 10:34 amYesterday morning I was playing the piano and heard someone knock at the neighbor's door. Actually, it was knocking on the neighbor's downstair's flat that he rents as a Bed & Breakfast. Since there are only ever temporary tenants there, it's unusual for anyone to have guests.
There was no answer, so the knocker left. It was a black man in a very distinguishable bright red jeep-like vehicle. (About the only thing I know about cars is color.)
There was more knocking this morning. This time it was persistent. It was a different guy, but I saw him go out to the same bright red vehicle with the guy from yesterday in the driver seat. I guessed that maybe the visitor next door, Damien (Steve had met him earlier in the week at The Edge), was leaving today and they were supposed to take him to the airport??? They got Jan, the owner who lives upstairs there, to come open the door. Jan spoke with Damien, but didn't let them in. Jan just told the guys to leave.
A bit later, I heard some shouting in our backyard. One of the jeep guys had pushed through the door to our backyard. The door has not been latching well the past few days. The guy had jumped the fence and was shouting at Damien through the window. Something about "when you use drugs, you need to pay." Christ. Jan beat me to getting outside and yelled at the guy to leave. He headed out front but lingered at the vehicle. I went out front, wrote down their license plate number, and told them to keep off my property. I was holding the phone and dialed 9-1-1, but didn't have to hit SEND before they took off.
I immediately called my landlord to get the backdoor fixed. Jan came over and talked to Steve for awhile. I guess Damien is leaving this morning anyhow. Good riddance.
