Instructions on collection of a home anal Pap smear

This morning I did the home anal Pap smear for the study.

You may ask a friend for assistance if you wish.

To collect the specimen:

1) Put on the latex gloves.
2) Remove the Dacron swap from its package and moisten it with tap water.
3) Insert the swap at least 2 inches into the anal canal. It may be easier to do this lying on your side (see FIGURE 1).



4) Apply gentle pressure with the swab to the walls of the anal canal such that the swab is bowed slightly. Then coninuously rotate the swab in a circle as you slowly withdraw the swab. Do this for about 10-15 seconds.

Now tomorrow I get to go have the process done again by a professional. I also had to fill out a questionairre. One of the questions was:

Did you find the process:
a. Very uncomfortable
b. Slightly uncomfortable
c. Slightly comfortable
d. Very comfortable
e. Extremely comfortable

What is worse - the fact that they included detailed instructions with a technical drawing, or the fact that some people out there might actually NEED detailed instructions and a technical drawing?
