Work Stuff
Nov. 19th, 2003 09:18 amI went to a couple presentations yesterday by this year's batch in the mentoring program. One was typical, and poorly done. One of the presenters was woofy, so I did write "woof" on his feedback.
The second presentation I saw was really well done. Two of the three presenters referred to their notes a lot, but it didn't really detract. They were well prepared and did great on the Q&A portion. I gave them great feedback. Their mentor was woofy, despite my usual unattraction to redheads. I later checked the gay email distribution list (you can be "out" on the list or have your name kept as anonymous), and found his name there. Woohoo.
I met with the HR coach in the afternoon for an hour. That meeting went well. She gave me some ideas. She was pretty optimistic and seemed impressed by my potential. Let's hope that carries through. She suggested bypassing the HR rules (she had been in HR for years) that relate to applying for jobs. You're supposed to apply for a job online and wait for the recruiter. She said to apply for the job, but then contact the hiring manager directly, asking for a chance to meet with them or someone in their area to further explain the job.
I got back to my desk and immediately emailed the hiring manager for the most recent job for which I applied. The manager enthusiastically replied, and she is having me meet with the person who is currently doing the job. That meeting has yet to be scheduled, but I'm psyched. It may mean a big drop in pay (10%, maybe more?), but it might be something I'd welcome if the job is right.
I had my bi-weekly meeting with my boss. She seemed pretty negative, but I stayed focused. I've been doing my part, and I wasn't let her get away with dismissing things. It took over 30 minutes, which is unusual, but it ended ok.
