Got up around 5:30am on Tuesday to get ready for the trip. We left around 6:45am to Oakland. With the rain, Xmas travellers, and security level ORANGE, that seemed like adequate time to leave for our 10am flight.

There wasn't too much traffic on the roads, and the rain didn't slow things down too much. Had a coupon to park at off-airport parking, PCA, for $9.50 per day. Helluva lot cheaper than Oakland's insane short-term parking rates. Found the place okay, and the shuttle van was right there to pick us up.

There were big lines outside the terminal. Eek. I had flashbacks to two years ago when I waited in line at Oakland for 4 hours. With only carry-on bags, we bypassed the outside line and made it to an inside "no-bags" check-in. We were making this trip because Steve had a "free ticket." Turns out, it was round-trip for one, or one-way for two. Seems incomprehensible that the reservation agent on the phone would let him book two roundtrip tickets with not enough certificates. Crap. We'd have to pay for the return trip separately. I never would have gone to Vegas at that price. I'll handle reservations in the future.

The security line went fairly quickly. I got cruised in line by some cute cub. Always a highpoint to any day. I didn't beep through security. Wow, I always get beeped, although the hand-wanding never shows anything.

Our flight was on time, and there were even a few empty seats on the plane, including the middle seat between us. (Steve likes the window to rest on for napping. I like the aisle for my "perky" bladder.)

Quickly caught a cab from the airport to Harrahs. We got there shortly after noon, and check-in was no problem. The room was up on floor 15. It had a small balcony and faced the towers of Imperial Palace. We also had a view of Bellagio. Probably could wave to [livejournal.com profile] robert510 in the penthouse suite there. Of course, SuperTan was probably off doing something more fabulous than waving to a room on floor 15 of Harrahs.

Took a walk down to NYNY and gambled for a bit. (Steve played blackjack, and I stuck to slots or video poker.) Got back to Harrahs, and Steve napped for a bit while I transcribed some of "What Is This Feeling?" from Wicked. We gambled for another hour, then we walked (and walked and walked) over to Rio. The fresh air did us good. We went to Rio's "Seafood Village Buffet." I first balked at the $34 price, but it was something Steve had been wanting to do. OHMYGOD. That was the best buffet I've experienced. With any buffet, I had to make sure I ate more food than necessary. Gotta get your money's worth, after all.

We caught the shuttle from Rio back to Harrahs. Gambled for a bit, then off to bed, thus ending day 1.
