Lordy, Lordy, Look Who's Forty...
May. 31st, 2003 10:30 amWhat a busy couple of days. Thursday afternoon I got my haircut. It was scheduled for 2pm. Michael had two other people ahead of me, so I didn't get in the chair until 2:25pm. The only saving grace was that the guy ahead of me, Tommy, took off his shirt for the haircut. Great furry chest on him. Woofs.
I then met Steve at the camera shop. The camera guy was leaving for an hour, so we went home, took care of some things, and came back. Steve bought a great camcorder. The Sony TRV33. Hope we figure it out!
Got home and Steve napped while I read through the initial camcorder stuff in order to at least get the battery charged. Took care of some other stuff for the party, then showered and got ready for my coffee date.
Steve's futon was to be delivered between 5-8pm. It hadn't arrived by 6pm, so I woke up Steve so that I could leave for my coffee date. Steve would join me once the futon was delivered.
Got to Starbucks and Jim Gatteau and Jeff Johnston were out front. Jeff wished me happy birthday. Guess Jim told him. Still, no way I'd extend a party invite. I went inside and ordered my grande non-fat latte. I got the table facing the door by the back wall. Good location for waiting for someone. Kevin showed up about 6:40pm. It was obviously him. A 19-year old sure stands out. He was cute, and very much 19. He sat down and we chatted for awhile. He seemed quite nervous. I had so much other stuff on my mind, that I wasn't nervous at all. Because sex wasn't something on my mind, maybe that made things easier. Steve called at 6:45pm, and still no futon. He called back just after 7pm to say it had been delivered and that he was on his way. He showed up and we chatted for a few more minutes. Jeff Johnston was back at Starbucks and came over. He found out Kevin was 19 and asked if he was Steve's grandson. LOL! Yep, no party invite for him. We invited Kevin to join us at The Cove for dinner. He accepted the invite, but wouldn't be eating. Whatever. He sat down and then he decided he needed to leave. Whatever. We invited him to stop by the party, and he seemed enthused to do so. He also mentioned maybe doing something with us on Saturday. Hard to figure out.
Dinner was good. Cream of mushroom soup was yummy. Soups at the Cove are the best. I had a reuben. They make it just the way I like it: yummy.
Got home and worked on things. I had installed the wall shelves in the afternoon. They look pretty damned good. I cleaned up the downstairs. It was about 10:30pm and I was exhausted. The rest could wait until morning.
Got up Friday and worked on getting things ready. We installed the party lights around the deck. They look good, and makes it safer to see the corner edge of the deck. The day was cloudy, and it didn't look like the sun would come out for awhile.
We went to Costco and ate lunch before we started to shop. We had their "chicken bake." From the pic, it looked about the size of a mozzarella stick, so we also ordered a polish sausage. The chicken bake thingies were actually huge. Steve only could eat half of his. Of course, I ate nearly the rest of his half as well. Oink.
We shopped and filled our basket to over capacity. After we got in line, the cashier eventually came out and put a "Sorry, Lane Closed" sign on our basket. Good. We'd be the last ones through. No one bitching about the amount of stuff we had. She rang us up and gave us two carts to take. Perfect. Steve loaded the trunk so that the party trays wouldn't get smashed or slide around. He has a knack for that.
Got home and there was no parking due to street cleaning on the one side of the street. Steve parked illegally at the corner. He stayed with the car while I made several trips. Although I had cleaned out the refrigerator of most everything else, there still wasn't enough room for all the trays. I just one tray in the refrigerator downstairs. Then we headed to Safeway to pick up the cakes and get a few other things. Got home around 2pm. Whew.
Continued with party preps. Steve cleaned the sliding glass door windows, which desperately needed it. They look so much better now. Great, good job, Steve! ;-) I continued to get things ready. So much work! We picked up a helium tank at Costco for balloons. I started with those, and then the Safeway delivery guy showed up. He made trip after trip to put stuff on the deck. I'm SO happy I had the beverages and ice delivered. Definitely worth the $4.95 delivery charge. After the delivery, I spent the next hour getting the beverages on ice and the rest moved to the downstairs refrigerator. I'm glad the refrigerator was semi-working. It makes some high squealedd noise, so obviously that's one reason it's gonna be trashed. During the party we'd turn it off and use it as a giant cooler.
The new neighbors showed up just as the delivery guy was finishing up. Ann seemed nice. They were busy with moving, so I let them be. I did extend an invitation to the party. She seemed happy for the invite.
Steve filled up balloons with helium then napped for a few minutes. I vacuumed, then showered. We set out the food. Everything looked pretty good. Guess we were ready. Jim & Terry were the first guest to arrive, just a few minutes after 7pm. Guests trickled in. I showed them upstairs while Steve showed them the downstairs. We forgot to put on the invite to not bring gifts. Some people did. Some people are damned generous. The first gift we got was delivered in the afternoon. It was a lovely tropical plant from Mark Battat. He sure is classy. Jack & Steve gave me a great flip-fold shirt thingy. Perfect. I dug out a bunch of t-shirts this morning and folded 'em in a jiffy. Other gifts were bottles of wine, gift certificates, and Rich T. gave us some great sex stuff. Guess he'll have to come over later and demonstrate for us. I still can't believe people brought gifts. Fabulous. I was just tickled that people actually showed up!
Jeff was my only regular sing-a-long person until about 8pm. I grabbed Jeff so we could start some singing, then Jim Cunningham showed up with a few others. He brought Phil, who has a good voice. I played and sang for about an hour. American Bear Dave picked out the South Park book, so we sang some tunes from there. They're hard to play, but the lyrics are oh-so fab. Later, Leslie called. She started a new job and was just beat, so she couldn't make it. David Witten called. His dog had a seizure. Often, a seizure is followed by others, so he had to stay home with him. We missed Leslie and David at the party.
My neighbor, Robert, showed up a bit after 9pm. He had a listing on Craigslist for an apartment near me. He sounded fun, so I had extended an invite. Always good to meet the neighbors, especially great gay ones.
Most people started to head out around 9:30pm. Steve from square dancing showed up about then. He and Robert stayed until about 11pm. I was bushed. A long day. Is this what 40 is all about?
Got up this morning to see half-dead balloons in the living room. Lots of clean up to do today. Yuk. And we have leftover food. I think we'll probably take it to the Lone Star this afternoon. Bears will eat anything.
My new neighbors are moving stuff into the storage area this morning. They stopped and talked with me for about 15-20 minutes. They both seem really friendly. Looks like they'll probably make for good neighbors. Rob knows all about wiring and stuff, so he might come in handy!
