Looks like necessity will end up changing my hairstyle.

I probably won't be able to shower for a few months. I'm thinking that grooming would be easier for me if I buzzed my hair so that I wouldn't have to bother with shampoo.

Some of my friends buzz their own hair at home. Any advice on doing that?

Attach the blender blades without the pitcher, and use the highest speed to ensure less pain.

giggle

I use Whal clippers and a hand mirror. Been doing it for years.

But doesn't the "pulverize" setting apply a more even cut?

Do you use a certain tip on the Wahl clippers? Are they haircut clippers?

I don't user an attachment for the closest cut.

They are haircut clippers.

During the brief periods of the last ten years or so that I got lazy about shaving I just used the clippers with the #1 edge and it made for a comfortable and pretty good looking result. Going with no guard made my hair more like a toilet scrub brush. #1 allowed for a little softness.

Also, no mirror, I just did it by feel, which is how I shave my head as well. Maybe that explains the scars....

That said, you'll have time to invite somebody to come by every day and take care of all kinds of necessary "tasks", why not just let your flat top be one of them ;-)

Thanks for the info. I've gotta make myself a "task" list!

I use the #1 guard on the clippers.

And this wonderful barber once taught be that you can't just run the clipper in smooth evenly paced lines up and down your head. It's best to do start out with long even passes up the sides of your head, but then go back over them with short little bursts, almost like you were polishing something, up a little, down a little, up a little more, down a little, up even more, down a little. Kinda like that. God this is hard to explain.
Anyways, it makes sure you are getting all the hairs the same length and not missing any stragglers.
Just go over and over your whole head until you don't hear any hairs being clipped.

In addition to what everyone else has said, I also take a shower after I do it and then rebuzz over the loose hairs that may have been flattened the first time.

It also helps sometimes to have someone else handle around the back of your neck, depending on how you want that to look. I'm not very hairy, so I just buzz my neck myself. But, people with a hairy back need to decide how they want the back hair to blend into the head hair.

You'll want a stiff brush, like a nail brush...handy for cleaning off/out the cutter-bars. They don't function well, if they clog, which they will, and the brush that'll come with the kit will be useless! Get a bottle of sewing machine oil, too...Zoom-Spout brand has just that, a spout that extends. Gets into the tight spots easily, AND you can watch the little bubbles go up and down...whee!

You can shower, just put a plastic bag on your foot with a rubber band around it. Unless they forbade you from doing it, strict doctor's orders. If it's in a cast, it is immobilized.

Nope, they forbade me from the shower. I currently have splints of some sort. They said that if a drop of water gets on it, I need to go to the doctor immediately to have everything replaced. I guess water makes the splints very malleable. If it were to rain, I'd be in trouble.

I could put a bag over the leg with the leg hanging out of the shower. I am not to put ANY weight on the bad leg, so the balancing required to do that is beyond me. Perhaps if my shower was outfitted for a cripple it'd be easier to do that, but there's no way I can manage at this time.

I use Wahl hair clippers which came with many different size guides, but I use no guide. There is an adjustment lever on mine which I set to the longest position to both remove any chance of cutting my head and so t-shirts will still slip over my head easily. ;)

I stand in the shower (not with the water on) facing my bath mirror to cut it so there's no mess, then shower so there's no itching from stray hairs. I go over the back of my head several times feeling for longer hairs that may have I missed. If I spend enough time, I'll get em all.

It's easy and all that money you used to spend on barbers can be spent on boys. :)

I use a Wahl grooming set I bought at Wal-Mart about four years ago. I previously tried a cheaper set. There's a reason they were cheap. I use a #1, but I don't do the cutting myself - my resident hairdresser [livejournal.com profile] billeyler does the cutting for me. He has become very proficient, and I'm always willing to pay him for his time, in whatever way he'd like...

I'm not at home right now, or I'd get you my model number. I use a beard trimmer, that has a rotating dial for the guard to move up and down. I do the back and sides on #1 usually, which is almost bald, then remove the guard and eyeball the top like mowing a lawn.

Gah! What is it with bears and their fucking trimmers?
You might try looking for a shower seat, when you get a more water-resistant cast. I bet Walgreens has them. Or, in a pinch, you could use a 5-gallon bucket. A hand-held shower head helps reach those places you can't turn toward the water.
