I'm not even going to try to pretend that I'll be able to remember details from everything since my last entry. There will probably be bits of info that I'll add as later entries as I remember them.
On Thursday, I took the Caltrain to Steve's and stayed overnight. We ate at some Sushi place in San Carlos. I wasn't impressed. I think we then came home and watched TV before going to bed.
On Friday I made coffee, read the paper, then called into work and left a voicemail for my boss saying I'd be out sick. **cough**
Our flight was at 1:40pm. The Super Shuttle was early. We selected the 11:45am choice, but ended up with a van scheduled for 11:15am, but he got in early at 11am. Whatever. Got to the airport around 11:45am and checked in. No problem. My watch or belt set off the metal detector, so I got searched. Or perhaps they manually set it off to search me since I was wearing my t-shirt that said, "Due to increased security, all articles of your clothing must be removed immediately."
We walked past the gate, and the sign said our flight was delayed until 2:20pm. We went to the bar and got some sodas and played Scrabble. Around 12:30pm we ordered some sandwiches. I went back to the gate to check the status. It still said delayed, and departing at 2:20pm. I then checked the monitor. Instead of a delayed time, it said "DIVERTED." I checked with the gate agent, and our plane had landed in Oakland due to the "weather." (Light rain...GRRRRRRRRR) We had to claim our checked bags and then catch a shuttle to Oakland. By the time we got our bags and to the shuttle area, there were about 50 other passengers also waiting. We finally got a shuttle around 1:35pm and got to Oakland an hour later. The flight was now leaving at 2:55pm. We re-checked our bags and made it to the gate just as they were opening the doors, so we were the first to board. Bob was the only square dancer we saw on the flight. His seat was two rows ahead of us, so we had him switch with the woman who was sitting next to me. The flight was pretty turbulent when we got near Palm Springs, but otherwise fine. We were just glad to finally get there around 5pm. That was my first experience with a diverted plane.
Claimed our checked bags and got the rental car from budget. They upgraded the car to a Hyundai XPG or something. It was pretty big. We gave Bob a ride to CCBC. Got checked in to the resort and dumped our bags in the room before heading a couple rooms over for the Peel-Off registration. Saw lots of guys we knew. Got our badge then went back to the room to get naked like everyone else. :-)
The resort provided a BBQ dinner at 7pm. At 8pm we had the Trail-In Dance. Even with the lights, it was pretty dark for dancing. Not only was this my first time to square dance naked, it was my first time to dance outside, at night, on grass, on a slight slope. It was fun, and I was looking forward to dancing the next day in the daylight.
After dancing, Steve and I went to The Barracks for a little bit. There was some porn star thing going on, and it was a very "leather" crowd. I was ready to go after one beer. I did see Scott, a former Schwabbie. He was selling raffle tickets. I guess he was one of the featured porn stars that were there. We then went to Sidewinders for a couple beers. It was pretty dead, but the bartenders were friendly. Fred, who used to bartend at The Edge, was working there and recognized me. We got home around midnight.
I prowled for a bit. Got my cock sucked in the video room, then went back to the room. Not much prowling.
On Saturday, I got up around 6:30am. Had some coffee, and enjoyed a nice long steam. Steve got up around 8am. Dancing started at 9:30am. We danced pretty much until lunchtime. After lunch I danced for a bit while Steve relaxed by the pool. I decided to skip the shoes and dance barefoot on the grass like some of the others. Mistake. Some of the grass was hard and I got some splinters. At 3:30pm we had the square dance tip in the pool. We had 3 squares for that. It was lots of fun. Pretty impossible, but still fun. Lots more contact going on underwater than for the other dancing.
After that we relaxed by the pool a bit before getting ready for dinner. I got back to the room and realized that some of my toes were bleeding. I had cuts on the bottoms of about 5 toes. Ouch! I think it was a combination of dancing barefoot and then all that dancing in the pool.
For the evening dance, the local club first had a buffet set up at the Cathedral City Community Center (our one "Clothed" dance). Dinner was good, but I ate too much before dancing. I usually try to eat at least an hour before a dance. I'm guessing that there were 7 or 8 squares. Maybe more. It was fun to dance with that many people. In another area of the Community Center, there was a reception for a wedding. Lots of the little kids from the reception kept coming over to stand in the doorway to watch us dance. They seemed to get a kick out of it. As the night wore on, several guysw ere taking off their shirts. This piqued the kids interest even more. Along with the little kids, there was a 16-year old boy who seemed totally fascinated by all these men dancing together. He was especially eyeing Bruce, a really muscle-y guy who was wearing metal armbands on each arm. I'm sure we'll be seeing that kid "out" and about in another few years.
After the dance, we were pretty exhausted. We got back to the resort and I prowled for just a bit. Sucked someone off in the sauna, then got back to the room and just crashed.
I got up around 6am on Sunday morning. I enjoyed a nice steam and a good soak in the hot tub. Steve got up around 8:30am. We had coffee and muffins and sat out by the pool for a couple hours. They didn't start dancing until after 10am. We danced sporatically until about 1pm. Then we had lunch, and a lot of the guys left after that. I'm glad we decided to stay. The weather was beautiful on Sunday. Saturday had been very windy. Palm Springs even experienced some microbursts.
Around 4pm we got ready then went to The Barracks for their beer bust. Steve was wearing a tshirt with some square dance logo. Some guys from Orange County saw his shirt and turns out they were also square dancers, but weren't in town for the Peel-Off. One of them, Jim, was absolutely adorable. Mark & Steve showed up with Carlos a little bit later. I also saw JJ there. Sunday's bear crowd was a lot better than Friday night's leather crowd. I saw Bruce from the dance, and also Dan who is a local who was at Saturday's dance. He was real cute, and I'm glad he showed up. I got a good kiss in before we left around 7pm.
We got back to the resort and met up with Kim and Bennett for dinner as planned. They took us to a place called Capras. It is owned and operated by relatives of Frank Capra. The service was extremely slow and the food was only so-so. However, the staff was extremely friendly and chatty. On display at the restaurant is one of the six of Frank Capra's Oscars. Our waitress, Julia, let us handle the Oscar. Kim & Bennett had done that last time they were there. Steve kept making practice "acceptance" speeches. We had a good time.
Got back to the resort, and I prowled for a bit. I kept running into folks from the weekend's dance in the steamroom, sauna, video room, etc. I finally got away from them and sucked off some bearish guy in the back tent area. Then off to bed. Not much prowling over the weekend.
Got up at 4am and packed up all my stuff. I brought WAY too much stuff for the trip, and probably didn't use half of it. I got ready, then woke Steve up at 4:30am. He showered, packed, and we checked out around 5:30am. Returned the rental car and checked in at the Alaska counter around 5:45am. Even though I had brought too much stuff, I had neglected to pack a shirt to wear to work today. I ended up buying a Palm Springs sweatshirt that was on sale. Ran into Mark & Steve around 6:30am just as they announced boarding. They were in the row behind us. The flight was fine. I got my necessary stuff out of my bags (keys, badge, etc.) and then took Steve to get him a Super Shuttle. He took my bags so that I wouldn't have to carry them. I then caught the Samtrans KX express bus and got downtown to work at 9:30am. Work. Grrrrr. One nice thing is that my boss is "working" from home today.
The weekend was nice, but long. I got to meet lots of nice guys, although I probably would have preferred to NOT see some of them naked, LOL. Others were VERY nice to see that way, although there were only a few of the square dancers that I found attractive. Enough, to make it nice. Stuart showed up for the weekend. I only found out last week that he moved to Cathedral City from here a month ago. It was great to see him. He seemed to have a good time. The dancing was good, and I got in a lot of good experience. Several guys said I was a good dancer, and lots more said that it showed that I enjoyed myself. I screwed up plenty of times, but only broke down a square a couple times. I helped out more than I hindered, so that was good.
You'd think I'd have enough dancing for awhile. With class and club night schedules, I'll be dancing again tonight, tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday, making for 7 days in a row. Egads. It IS a cult!
