I just recalled that the documentary last night did finally explain for me an Armistead Maupin reference. He wrote a line something like "...Carol Doda's tits winking at me." The documentary showed the Carol Doda sign at the now-defunct Condor where pink neon lights as her nipples flashed on and off. Maupin still amazes me. And Drew potlucked with him. Not to mention that Sister Constant Chlamydia bumped into him at WOW and then slept with him. I prefer the vision of the potluck.
