Woofy Schwabbie
May. 15th, 2003 09:36 amI went out around 11:30am to buy my Caltrain ticket for the trip down the peninsula later in the afternoon. Tickets purchased aboard the train are $3 more. Depending on the arrival of Muni, I'm sometimes running to catch the train and don't have time to stop then and buy my ticket, so I wanted to do it ahead of time and to get some fresh air. I didn't take my jacket, as I expected nice weather like the previous days. WRONG. It was cool and very windy. I made sure to grab my jacket at 12:30pm before heading up to my 1pm presentation.
My boss wasn't at her desk, so I just took my materials up the street with me. I got there, and Michael was there as well as John who set up the projector and arranged the dial-in number. My boss wasn't there. Hmmmm. Bitch. John was even more handsome in person. A very tall bear with a great beard. WOOF. I shook his hand, but wanted to hug him instead. And other verbs.
Getting near 1pm, we had John print off some brochures that my boss was supposed to bring. He got back with a few just as my boss arrived. Bitch. We had only 3 people show up in person. About half a dozen were on the phone. Good thing we sent out the PowerPoint questions via email ahead of time. The presentation went well, and there was a lot of dialog. We use a game show format, so the players confer with each other and talk out reasons for their answers before deciding. They do half the teaching for us.
Afterwards, Michael and Debra talked to woofy John about sending out a feedback survey. He asked if they used the online STAR survey, but they just use some Word document. He said that STAR was really easy to use and takes about 10 minutes to learn. I immediately volunteered to meet with John again to learn how to use it. ;-) Opportunity is not a lengthy visitor. I'm going over to his desk at 11am this morning for some hands on training. John is probably the most bearish-looking man I've seen at Schwab. Nice scenery is a good thing.
My boss had a meeting at 4pm. Turns out that she (and our group) no longer reports to Joyce. We now report to Gizelle. I don't know Gizelle. The feeling I got from others at the meeting was that Gizelle is a power-hungry bitch. Debra seemed to really admire her. Bitch. I like Joyce, so I'm sad to see the change. Guess we'll see how things go.
I got to the train station and caught the 4:55pm train. Turns out that it doesn't stop in Belmont, so I called Steve to have him pick me up in San Carlos. There was a 5pm train, but that arrived in Belmont 15 minutes after this one arrived in San Carlos. We went to Feng Yuan for dinner. Not that good, but it's close to the church where we dance. We had egg rolls (huge and greasy), Won Ton soup (good, with lots of dumplings and chicken chunks), and vegetables with steamed rice. I usually can eat more than that, but we still ended up taking some home.
Dancing was good. I saw Roz and told her that I had read about her online in some straight club's newsletter. She didn't know about it and was excited about it and told several people. (I looked up the link again today so that I can show it to her. I love Google.) The Benadryl didn't make me nearly as groggy last night, so I could pay attention. I only made a few minor mistakes, but those were quickly caught and fixed. Some of the newer (and even older) dancers had problems at times, but it was pretty fun. Besides dancers screwing up, Andy & Rich both screwed up some of the calling. When we left, the full moon made total sense. It is time for board elections, so being a member now, they gave me a ballot. I had to pick 3 out of 4. All good choices. That's a great club.
Got to Steve's and watched the channel 4 "Sex and the City" documentary. It had a couple interesting facts, but it was pretty dry. I liked the other documentaries by the same guy much better. I was tired and went to bed around 11pm while Steve stayed up to watch TV. I slept pretty well, only waking up a couple times. My head is still a bit stuffy this morning, but not too bad.
Caught the 6:30am train and read the paper. In to the office around 7:30am. Read a couple BML issues. The BOSF dialog is really a downer. On one hand, it's easy to put the blame back on someone who's not having fun. It's your own choice. Most people agree. But there is also the matter of perception. From what I'm reading, I get the perception that BOSF is unwelcoming, and now I'm seeing how one could perceive that. I know that this isn't the case usually, but the perception sure is there. Someone pointed out the animosity between SF bears and LA bears, even to the point that LA bears are hosting BearQuake the same weekend as Dore Alley on purpose. Bizarre. I'm clueless on these things, but we sure haven't gone to any effort to work together with other clubs. One thing that I do know is that there IS an attitude about certain things or events where I've heard "If they don't like it, it's their problem." BOSF board members work hard, some more than others. Doing the "hostess" thing seems like an extra amount of unneeded work. Maybe that's why there's a bad perception issue. Not being on the board this next year, maybe I can do a better job of meeting & greeting folks. I think I do a good job of that for things like Alcatraz and milling about the lobby at IBR and definitely at the Lone Star, but at other events I just want to be selfish and enjoy myself. Being a social butterfly does not come naturally to me until a six-pack or so. I can do it, but it's work and a bit forced. But, I'd rather do the work than to feel embarassed about being part of badly-perceived club. Sometimes being embarassed is fun if it makes others laugh, but being embarassed for a negative reason is one of the worst feelings I experience. I'm not on the board next year. I'm not on the board next year. I'm not on the board next year.
Got an email from Dennis. He wants to host a sing-a-long next Friday. Sounds good to me, even if we do end up having a sing-a-long and party the following Friday for our birthday.

what does online star survey ...
Also, "... We use a game show format, so the players confer with each other and talk out reasons for their answers before deciding..." Can you be more explicit about the 'format'? I don't quite get the idea.
I'll save other questions for later (in particular expressions you use in square dancing).

re: online star survey
Date: 2003-05-15 12:06 pm (UTC)That online star survey is just a way to distribute surveys at work on our intranet and be able to view replies in graphical charts.
Some people do online blogs as a service to others with inspiring comments. Mine is not so noble. I forget a lot of stuff, so it's easier for me to do a brain dump each day via the blog, then I can refer to it later. I probably use a lot of terms that make no sense to others. Thanks for stopping to ask about one of those. Continue to do so, and I'll try to elaborate in those cases.
