Record highs yesterday in the City: 97 degrees. Hot, but not oppressive. I certainly don't miss the humidity of the midwest or upstate NY. I stopped at Walgreens on the way home and got a fan. That helped. No air condition needed.

At work I attended a "Dialog with Geoff" meeting. Geoff is our CIO and holds these open forum meetings every month or so. Most of the meeting was spent talking about Offshore workers. Looks like the momentum is really going to move more and more of our jobs to India. Sounds like in a few years, most coding will be done by Offshore workers. People here will be doing "higher level" jobs. After the meeting I found out that our help desk is being replaced with Offshore staffing. Crap. My ear has the hardest time discerning Indian accents. If I can't understand, I'll demand to speak with someone I can understand. If you're going to be supporting American jobs, let me here an American accent. Grrrrrr. I wonder what kind of contingency do overpaid American execs have for when India and Pakistan nuke each other?

Studies show that in 4-5 years, there will be a shortage of COBOL programmers in America, since most of them will have retired. I thought that would be job security for me. Lots of people don't understand that there are billions of lines of COBOL code that need to be maintained (and are still be created), and they aren't going away. I didn't count on all the COBOL coding jobs being moved Offshore. I may look into getting some career counselling. Winning the lottery is just not panning out.

Got my haircut yesterday. A bit shorter due to convention next week. My face looks thinner, but my stomach looks 5 times as fat. Lovely. I think I need to reduce my salt intake. Tom had previously made comments about retaining water, and it seems he has proven to be correct.

Caught a glimpse on TV of the American flag flying above the Castro. Very kewl and made me reflect on the day's Supreme Court ruling. [livejournal.com profile] drewbearsf's comments about seeing it were so different and so funny. Glad his scenario wasn't the case. What a great week for Gay Pride.

I worked around the apartment most of the evening. I was expecting Steve to call me after his ECR bylaws meeting and then meet me at the Lone Star. I showered and got ready. As it got later, I figured that he forgot to call. I removed my contacts and waited. He finally called at 10pm. They had just gotten done with their meeting. Too late for me to go out on a school night. I'd have loved to gone out to celebrate. They were having a beer bust, the weather was great for a tank top, and the Supremes did something good for a change. (Will Clarence Thomas just die already? I think the man has voted opposite from my views on every single thing up for vote. And Scalia's comments about the homosexual agenda made me livid. Where can I get a copy of this "agenda"?)

Steve arrived about 11pm, and I was ready to crash. Grrrr. Moved the fan to the bedroom and slept fitfully. I had a dream about going back to work in A-5, my radio intercept Russian analyst job in the army. I told someone that the lesson to learn was to "not burn bridges." Unlike my pal, Andy, I don't tend to burn bridges. (In this sense, Andy would be a pyromaniac.) That army job was the one for which I was most passionate. Besides Steve, my only passion now is for square dancing. I don't think there's much money to be made there. I'll keep my eye open for ideas when I check out the vendors at convention next week.
