FCD Plus class
Mar. 3rd, 2004 09:07 amSteve made meatballs for dinner. Yum.
We then headed out to square dance at FCD's Plus class. Enough people for three squares. Not sure how many of them were students. Reid showed up, and so did Tony. Always nice additions to ANY night!
Craig showed up. I think I overheard him saying that he had studied the calls. I wasn't in his square until the very end, but noticed hi squares broke down on most sequences. It's hard for people to learn if the square breaks down every time.
Andy & Michael tag-team taught. It's Michael's first time to be an official instructor. I think he was caught offguard at how poorly some of the people dance. Andy is obviously used to it, but it sure can be exasperating. One conversation from last night, aimed at two specific people: "Join right hands. Join RIGHT hands. Your RIGHT hand. Join your RIGHT hands. The OTHER RIGHT. No, don't turn around, just join RIGHT hands." Maybe we should start each class with the Hokey-Pokey.
Craig was in my last square. So was Robert. So was Tomas. And David. Oh Christ. Double-0-Steven & Richard were on the sidelines just laughing at me. The patter part was pretty funny. I tried to smile and laugh. "Spin Chain Thru" was reviewed. They encouraged people to say the "HALF, THREE-QUARTERS, HALF, THREE-QUARTERS" mantra. I said it louder and louder, but that obviously didn't work. Not sure what will work to get it to click with some people.
Although the patter part was um, amusing, the singing call was a disaster. Out of the 7 sequences, the square broke down 6 times. I told Craig a few times to just go to his "home." Afterwards, I explained to him that the boys always should end the sequence at home. He replied, "That's a good idea." Um, it's not an idea. Not even a suggestion. Steve continued to laugh at the square. I tried to continue smiling, but he said I was too mean. Just cuz I seriously considered removing "defying" from the "Death-defying Grand Square." Sheesh.
