Walked down to Mission Playground for the MNS club night. Don forgot the locker key. Oops. Dan also has a key, but he didn't show up. Harlan was the caller and showed up a few minutes after 7:30pm. He had no key. We stood around for awhile. Harlan made a couple phone calls but couldn't reach anyone.
Someone suggested that Harlan call without music. Without a mic, I thought that was pretty unfair to Harlan. However, Harlan agreed to call. (He did diplomatically confront Don about it afterwards to make sure this never happens again.)
I've enjoyed taking square dance classes with Harlan. I've heard that he's able to call multiple levels to the same square, but I never saw him do that. He did it last night. The man is brilliant. He used no cue sheets or anything. All sight calling. He put C1 dancers as heads and A2 dancers as sides. Even with no music, it was one fun night.
Oh, and they NEEDED me to dance C1. So much for requiring a diploma. They DID tell Lorraine, a C1 class member, that she couldn't dance in the full C1 spot. Good. All that diploma talk was really focused on her, even though Don told me it had to do with me.
Harlan did call a couple C1 class-level tips. That seemed to boost spirits of Richard and Lorraine. He even workshopped Percolate for them.
During the A2 tip, he included some C1 stuff and told them to just "go with it." A guy named Steve was the only person with no C1 experience (class or otherwise), and he was pulled through just fine. You could see the look of accomplishment on his face.
My respect for Harlan was high before. It's now elevated even further.

So why didn't Don just go back and get the key?
