Friends-only posts??

I've made some "friends-only" posts that have been copied and forwarded to "non-friends," although I'm not sure which "friend" did that.

Can you imagine anyone being that scummy?

Suggestions for dealing with this?

Once you find out who they are:
1) Unfriend them
2) Out them as the person who did that.

I think that is totally wrong and goes against LJ. That's why I say out whoever did it.

I think the whole issue here would be figuring out who did it, not so much what to do about it once he does figure it out.

This is one of many reasons my little blog pics are blessings, I can tell who is reading my journal when (and from where) by the picture server logs.

My point really was that the whole "Friends-Only" purpose is defeated if one person (or more) starts sharing private posts with non-friends. Trust is betrayed for starters.

Perhaps it is "tattling" if the perpetrator is revealed. Personally, I would like to know, since we share some common friends, and I would hate to think that someone who is untrustworthy on that issue might be doing the same to me or others.

What is this feature? And will it work if someone was reading from the FRIENDS view and not actually opening your posts specifically?

It is not an LJ feature. I host the small images in my journal entries on my own server. When someone looks at the journal entry, they pull up the picture and leave a record of it on my server logs.

Well, the only thing I can think of is to cross-reference your friends list with those who appear on the list of the non-friends, then monitor those people. *sigh* Stupid LJ users yield stupid LJ drama...sorry it's happening to you.

Sorry to hear -- people never cease to amaze me. But it is exactly why I don't use LJ to share too deep -- especially if it is something I don't want someone else to ever see. Same goes for e-mails and chats. I've known of instances where people will copy a chat, change what it said, then post or e-mail it to others.

Life is more fun when you share more, so there's little I don't share. That's not the issue for me. Why would I want to read someone's blog who didn't share?

I don't think there's a whole lot you can do, really. You have to operate under the knowledge that "Friends only" doesn't really mean your words won't be repeated elsewhere and take a measured risk in what you say.

I know that there's a measured risk, that's part of the fun of LJ. As far as doing something, I meant more along the lines of disclosing that person's identity. Make them wear a scarlet A or something.

I've set up friends groups so only certain friends can read sensitive posts that I don't want to send to my whole friends list.

Even then I am aware that like email, it is out there for the whole world to see once published.

Can I imagine, yes. That seems to be a recurring theme in many LJ dramas. Though my account it relatively new to LJ, I've been a reader/lurker for quite a while. I make it a point not to post anything that can't be disclosed at one point or another. But that's a personal choice on my part. I don't trust the security of most public forums.

I recently had a friend as me to circumvent the blocking choices of another friend. Both trust me, but they don't trust each other. I was unwilling to forward the posts, but I was willing to screen the information in the most summary of forms ("no, he's not staying stupid shit about you or yours, you're being paranoid.").

Suggestions, acknowledge that the information was secured and not intended for public use. If you can identify the intermediary, unfriend them or ask them to stop.

You could try writing a post with bait, to a person on a single friends group list, with something very obviously wrong about someone - and see if what you says filters back to them. If it does, you have your leak.
