Steve picked up the book for me yesterday.

I began reading it at the bus stop this morning, read it before work, during lunch, and on the bus ride home.

The cute porn guy sat next to me on the bus ride home. With a broken iPod, I wasn't wearing earbuds as usual today.

"How's the new Armistead Maupin book?"

"It's okay. Way better than his last two books. Not as good as Tales. I don't like his style this time of using first person singular."

I got home. I have no clue where my husband is, so I spent the last half hour finishing the book. The last few chapters of the book certainly were better than the first part of the book.

But why the hell did he have to spell it Dubose over and over? That annoyed me.

I prefer the writing style of Tales, but this was still fun to read. And quick.

Some copy editor in that publishing company needs to be SHOT over allowing the bogus word "Dubose" in that manuscript. Every time I read it, I heard nails across a blackboard.

His PREVIOUS editors didn't seem to have any problem spelling San Francisco place names. [making hissing cat sounds]

Other than that ... I really liked the book. It reminded me of the finale episode of Six Feet Under, only somewhat more restrained, and not quite as cathartic.

I got the book too

I'm on a big nostalgia trip with it, and at the same time I'm thinking, "This must be a little bit like what the queens in the '70s were experiencing with the first Tales, with all of the thoroughly up-to-date topical references, trendy restaurants, and insider stuff."

And yeah, I can't believe "Dubose" either. That makes no sense to me.

I'm guessing "Dubose" will only be a thorn in the side of people who live in SF, the rest of the world will not even notice. Take solace in the fact that at least visitors who have read the book will probably be pronouncing it correctly.

I finished that book last night. Yes, the narration was different - it was all Michael - but it was fun to see how the characters had changed with time and age. Still, there were a few other minor characters that I wish had appeared in more detail such as Dede and D'or and whatever happened to some of the A-Gays (actually, I have the complete and total answers on those guys). But then again, this story was all about Michael. Terrific.

Can't wait to read it
