Seminar / 42nd Street
Sep. 24th, 2003 09:50 amMy boss was out *sick* yesterday, so no bi-weekly one-on-one. Oh boohoo.
I attended a diversity-sponsored seminar at work yesterday that was titled "Personal Leadership - Your Role In Global Leadership." I was thinking this might touch on Offshore development or something. No. I got there, and the speaker had changed the second "Leadership" to "Citizenship." Still, it turned out that the only global reference was that he knows better than to ask people to raise their hands when he gives a seminar in Japan. The 1.5 hour seminar was pretty touchy-feely. At first, I was put off because the first two pages of the handout were copies of a graduation speech I had read last week at Patrick Comb's website. (I've read some inspirational stuff at his site.) The speaker quickly mentioned that most of his material was available in several places on the internet. Ok, at least he wasn't taking credit for it.
He did one exercise where we were to assume an arm-wresling stance with the person next to us. We were then given 30 seconds to see how many times we could get the back of the opponents hand to touch the table. I knew there must be some message. I quickly suggested to my "opponent" to work together. We alternated hitting the back of my hand to the table, and then hers. Obviously we "won." Not having done that exercise before, it was good to do the "think outside the box" thing.
He did talk about the growth curve and the role of delayed gratification. Somehow it struck a message with me concerning my weight. Hmmmm. If nothing else, the seminar cut two hours out of my work day.
I got home and cleared out some room in the downstairs closet. I think there'll be enough room for Steve's hanging clothes. Now just to find time to get it put away before he comes home on Saturday night.
After skipping 42nd Street two weeks ago due to exhaustion and lack of a date, I sent in my tickets to see about exchanging them. Yep, they said no problem, and my new tickets were at will call last night. Todd went with me. I had a free drink coupon I gave to Todd, but they only had soft drinks. Did they lose their liquor license? The dialogue was much worse than I remembered, but the singing and dancing pretty much made up for it. We snickered at much of the dialogue, so at least we were amused. I think that was my first time at a musical where I thought, "so THIS is why some people don't like musicals."
The show ended around 10:40pm. We stepped out into the lovely intersecion of 6th & Market to await a streetcar. Luckily, it wasn't a dreaded "Milano," but a comfortable Baltimore Canary. Todd got off at Sanchez, while I stayed on until the end outside Orphan Andy's. It was 11pm, and Castro Street was pretty dead. For Leather Week, I was a bit surprised. I looked in the door of Daddy's as I passed, and it wasn't very busy. I walked pass The Edge, but it was "Dark Tuesday" so I couldn't tell how many were there.
I got home, checked email, then went to bed. I haven't been sleeping too well with Steve away. I think it's mostly from lack of exercise. I did get up and do my exercise tape this morning. I told myself yesterday I'd go to the gym, but here I am at work, and the thought of bringing in gym clothes didn't once cross my mind this morning. Too busy remembering to move the car for streetcleaning and to try to figure out Steve's VCR to record the West Wing tonight. (I think I figured it out.)
