Today I found out that I need to give a presentation to the rest of the staff on when to send police to a patient's home to check on them. We have no set procedures, so I wondered if you have any thoughts about it.
An example of when we have done this is when a patient's lab results come back with a critically high value. The phone numbers and emergency contact number for the patient had been disconnected. The patient's pharmacy had the same phone numbers we had. We needed the patient to stop a certain medication.
A bad example is where a doctor (in another clinic) sent police to check on a patient because she had missed an appointment. ("But the patient had never missed an appointment previously!") The patient apparently was on vacation and was a tad pissed when she found out what happened.
At what point do you think sending someone out is a good idea?
