Steve got up a bit earlier than he needed, so we left the house around 5:15am. That left me some time to fill up the rental car tank before taking Steve to the hospital. We got Steve checked in a little before his 6am "appointment," so I was able to get him checked in, naked, robed, and then I was out of there by 6:05am.

I hopped on HWY 1 to 280 then 380 and got to the rental car place in about 30 minutes. I got the 7:07am BART back to the City and caught the #2 bus to work. I got there in time to stop at a nearby Starbucks to enjoy a coffee before work. Having the rental car and returning it timed out pretty well.

They let me take a longer lunch today to go see Steve. He was in his recovery room and was on the phone ordering his lunch. She gave him some IV pain medicine while I was there. His pain was 4 out of 10 at the time. He seemed to be doing okay. He hadn't seen the doctor yet, but the nurses told him the surgery went fine.

After work (I'll post a short friends-only work post in a tic), I went back to the hospital and visited with Steve until 8pm. I didn't realize that getting one's puppy fixed was such an ordeal! ;-)

Steve had a woman nurse during the day. At shift change, Steve said that a male nurse came in. The nurse said, "I bet you're disappointed that you didn't get a young and pretty nurse." Still armed with his sense of humor, Steve replied, "How do you know that you're not my type?" The nurse laughed.

When I saw Steve tonight, the pain meds had his pain level at a 1 out of 10. Excellent. He didn't seem too loopy, and we had a nice visit. They are discharging Steve sometime tomorrow, although I don't know when. [livejournal.com profile] expurgate offered to give him a ride home. Sweet.

After visiting for awhile, I was exhausted, and I left around 8pm. Three buses and a prescription refill later, I was able to get back home in 40 minutes. Yay.

Steve thanks you for your well wishes. Hopefully he'll be home and catching up on your blogs soon, although typing will be hard for him for a long time.

On BART this morning, I started reading Gregory Maguire's "Son of a Witch," the sequel to "Wicked."

I'm not exactly sure why (maybe because I could imagine Ray Bolger saying the line?), but I got a chuckle from this excerpt:

"I hate to be obvious," added the Scarecrow, "but you'd have saved yourself a heap of trouble if you weren't too cheap to invest in a leash, Dorothy."
