Making less sense

A topic for today's Algebra class was subtraction. A surprising number of people couldn't do it. Obviously they didn't attempt last week's homework. ("What is -7 - 0?") These people are going to be totally lost within another month.

After seven class sessions, we are still on chapter 1. It's a long chapter, but damn.

Shortenin' Bread

Learning piano as a kid, one of the songs was Shortenin' Bread. Pretty standard. The lyrics in the book were PC. The illustrations probably weren't, but I don't remember.

Later, I heard that the song was non-PC, but I never thought about it, cuz I'm never gonna hear the song again, right? This month's square dance music service include some versions of the song. Then it struck me: it's probably played on all black keys. Yup. It's taken me 40 years to get this non-PC pentatonic scale joke.
